Friendly day on pitch

YOUNGSTERS were taken out of the shopping malls and put onto the soccer fields last week for a friendly soccer competition at Nineveh Club's Soccer grounds, Edensor Park.

Young people aged between 14 and 22 years were invited to take part in the friendly competition in mixed teams of male and female.

Along 45 players, plenty of adults turned up to watch the action and cheer on the teams.

The event was organised by the Assyrian Resource Centre youth worker Susan Homeh.

She said the resource centre had been working with Fairfield Local Area Command and Stocklands Wetherill Park management to try and engage young people in positive activities.

"As Assyrians and Chaldeans love soccer, this was a perfect event to hold during school holiday," she said. "A warm-up game was played before the two-round knockout comp started between three teams.

"Young people played in a very sporting manner and everyone enjoyed the games. Notably, older players made younger ones feel part of the team, passing the ball around often."

The Fairfield Bulls Soccer Club was a sponsor of the event and provided equipment and a referee as well as cooking the free sausage sizzle.

"I love to see kids having enjoying themselves and sport is a great way to have fun and build friendships," club secretary Mirza Yousip said.

Fairfield LAC ethnic community liaison officers Alex Santana and Uttara Khchao attended the event and said they have been working with the Assyrian Resource Centre to help promote better community engagement with groups of young people who frequent local shopping centres. The winning team, as well as best and fairest players, were awarded gift vouchers.

Wetherill Park Woolworths and Stocklands and Fairfield SportFirst donated the prizes and helped cover the cost of the free meals.

Homeh said she has already been asked to organise another event by the young people who participated.

"I believe the day was successful because these young people had fun and got to know each other better, which they'll remember when interacting at the local shops," she said.

Kicked off: The Assyrian Resource Centre friendly soccer day was a huge success last Friday, July 13. Participants have already urged organisers to hold another school holiday event.
