in Smithfield

On Monday the 18th of December 2006, 200 local businessmen, religious and community leaders gathered at the Assyrian Australian Association’s Nineveh Club for a dinner with the leader of the NSW Opposition, Mr. Peter Debnam MP.

His Grace Mar Meelis Zaia, the Hon Peter Debnam MP,

His Eminence Mar Yakoub Daniel, Mr Andrew Rohan and Rev. Benyamin Shlimon.

The dinner was generously sponsored by the Assyrian Australian Association Nineveh Club and organised by Mr. Andrew Rohan, the Liberal Party’s candidate for the state seat of Smithfield at the upcoming state election on the 24th of March 2006.

Andrew took the opportunity to explain why he nominated to run in the next state election as the candidate for Smithfield. “… Over the past 12 years, I have witnessed essential services in Smithfield such as law & order, health, education and transport collapse” Said Mr. Rohan.

Andrew told those in attendance that this was a direct result of the vandalism and miss-management of the state’s economy by the Carr/Iemma Government and that as “a concerned citizen” he wanted to put NSW back in front and once again give the people of Smithfield the voice they deserved in the peoples parliament of NSW.

Andrew committed himself to:

  • Making housing more affordable for young families by increasing the First Home Owners Grant from $7,000, to $10,000;

  • Reducing the waiting list at Fairfield Hospital by funding more nurses;

  • Creating more local jobs and investment by cutting business taxes like payroll tax by up to $15,000 and for many businesses removing it completely;

  • Making sure every school in the electorate of Smithfield received the required funding to complete vital repairs and other maintenance work;

  • Protecting local neighborhoods and residents with a visible police presence; and

  • Helping Peter Debnam rescue NSW from a looming recession.

At the dinner Mr. Debnam also outlined his vision for NSW and how he would work with businesses in western Sydney to develop the appropriate policies to service the wants and needs of this important region.
