Office of Fair Trading
Partnership with AAA
By Edward Rowell

The Office of Fair Trading
held a conference on Monday 21 November 2005
at the Governor Macquarie Tower. Organised for Fair Trading Week and titled
‘Think Smart Ethnic Media and Community Leaders’, the conference was hailed
a success. The number of attendees has significantly increased, reflecting
the effective delivery of fair trading information and messages to ethnic
communities.
In 2005, the President of
Assyrian Australian Association, Mr Edward Rowell, registered the AAA as a
Think Smart Community Partner with the Office of Fair Trading. Mr Rowell
found the announcement of the new Ethnic Education Strategy to be very
beneficial to our community. The strategy has two areas of focus: general
consumer issues and tenancy rights. The Office of Fair Trading will deliver
information on its role and the types of services it provides in the areas
of consumer rights, tenancy rights and remedies for disputes. One initiative
of the new strategy is the Tenancy Grants Program which will provide
opportunities to fund community-focused organisations to develop and deliver
targeted tenancy programs.
In 2006, the Office of Fair
Trading has maintained ongoing contact with AAA and in March consulted with
the Assyrian Workers Network regarding issues and specific approaches to
effectively disseminate information to the Assyrian community. The
consultation was attended by Edward Rowell, Paul Gorgees, Marlin Babakhan,
Kardonia Daawod and Ashur Isaac.
The Assyrian Resource Centre
has also helped to modify the Office of Fair Trading fact-sheet called ‘We
Can Help You’. This information will be printed in the Assyrian language and
distributed to the Assyrian community.
