Breast Cancer Seminar
for Assyrian Women

The Breast Cancer Seminar was held at the Fairfield Neighbourhood Centre on
Thursday 15 September 2005 from 9:30 am to 12:30pm.
The main speaker for the day was Dr Eugene Moylan, Director Medical Oncology
Cancer Therapy Centre at Liverpool Hospital. His presentation was an
interactive format over a formal presentation, taking audience questions and
answering them by using of a whiteboard.
An Assyrian Interpreter was booked to translate audience questions and Dr
Mylan’s answers. His presentation was greatly appreciated by all
participants.
The other speaker was Seyla Phan, Registered Nurse from FPA/Health. Ms
Phan’s presentation covered women's health, breast examination and the
importance of having a mammogram.
Samiramis Ziyeh, Art Therapist, conducted an art therapy activity. The
seminar went very well. The aim of the of this seminar was to raise
community awareness about breast cancer, its identification, treatment and
management.
About the project:
Making a New Mould
Making a new mould project combines therapeutic and educational approaches
to address breast cancer prevention, intervention and treatment as well as
post diagnostic maintenance of healthy body, mind and spirit.
Weekly art therapy sessions facilitated by art therapist, Samiramis Ziyeh
will provide participants with safe and trusting environment where they can
explore their feelings, thoughts and share and care for one another.
Through the process of individual and communal art making the bond among the
group members will be strengthened allowing the participants to form and
sustain an art activity based support group that can continue its existence
beyond the funded period.
Making a new mould weekly art therapy sessions will commence
12 October 2005 on Wednesdays
